The UTP
Incubator's first tenant is All Cell Technologies, LLC, which was
formed to commercialize alternative energy technology developed at
IIT. The management team includes co-inventor Said Al-Hallaj, VP and
chief technology officer, who is also associate research professor
of Chemical and Environmental Engineering at IIT.
All Cell's
patented PCM (phase-change material) technology addresses the
problem of heat build up in rechargeable Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion)
batteries, which has discouraged their widespread use in high-power
applications. Because PCM technology protects batteries from
overheating, it leads the way for use of Li-Ion batteries in rapidly
growing applications, such as hybrid electric vehicles (HEV), fleet
electric vehicles, and personal transportation (e.g., Segway ®,
electric carts, and scooters).
On-going development focuses
on larger cell sizes and battery packs required for electric vehicle
(EV) and HEV applications, where complex and costly active cooling
systems or liquid circulation are currently the only alternative for
handling the heat generated by Li-Ion batteries.

Park to Spiff
Up IIT campus By
Sandra Guy Business Reporter Excerpt: The once-fledgling technology park on
the campus of the Illinois Institute of Technology is brimming with
new tenants and sprouting a landscape makeover. The University Technology Park at IIT, to be built in three phases
over 10 years, is the largest commercial investment on Chicago's
South Side since the construction of the new Sox stadium in the
early 1990s. Full
