Unlike generic small molecule pharmaceutical products, the development of biosimilar therapeutic proteins using recombinant techniques is a highly complex process. From the construction of a genetically modified cell that will express the product to efficient downstream purification and packaging, the cGMP manufacturing of biological products requires development of proprietary techniques. TPI has developed a proprietary perfusion based suspension culture technology for mammalian cells. TPI has developed manufacturing of biosimilar API using disposable technology for both CHO and E. Coli-based products. TPI has begun construction of its FDA cGMP compliant manufacturing facility at the University Technology Park at IIT in Chicago, and plans to supply biosimilar API in the 4th quarter of 2010.
